Neighborhood Garden at Parkview Baptist Church

Neighborhood Garden at Parkview Baptist Church Update August 2009:

1) We have submitted a grant application to Florida Organic Growers. If approved, we will be receiving 10 raised beds and related materials. Considering the total number of people (22) who expressed interest in participating in this project, we have looked at the following options:

a. Purchase additional raised beds, if additional funds can be secured. Such beds and related materials cost about $80.00 each.

b. Use a mixture of plot types (raised beds and natural ground). This option requires extra time to prepare the ground for planting and additional inputs such as edging materials, tilling equipment, plastic cover and seeds.

c. Any of the previous options will require irrigation. We are considering using rain barrels to facilitate that activity.

2) We now have a draft agreement for the neighborhood association (see attached). Please review this document and send any comments to my email address

3) The overall time line for this project had been amended as follows:

a. Harvest Celebration: TBA

b. Planting Kickoff: Early October

c. If approved, collect supplies from FOG to build raised beds: mid – late September

d. If natural ground plots are needed, land preparation activities: Late August

e. Attend County’s “Vegetable Gardening basics” class [Sept. 9, 2009], or organize special session for project participants [late September]

4) Here are specific ways the Stephen Foster Neighborhood can help us move this project forward:

a. Verify that those who signed up for a plot initially at the 5/14/09 meeting are still interested.

b. If FOG application is approved, we will need some volunteers to help transport materials for building beds. Anyone interested in helping should contact the church office or you may send me a list via email.

c. Identify any potential funding source to purchase additional raised beds

d. If natural ground plots are needed, we will need volunteers to complete land preparation activities (tillage, plastic cover setup, soil sampling etc). Anyone interested in helping should contact the church office or you may send me a list via email.

Sincerely,

Jean-Paul Calixte
